For as long as we have been replacing batteries customers are always asking us how can I increase the longevity of both my battery life through the working day and why does the battery need to be changed every few months. There are a few ways that you can squeeze more battery life from your smartphone and tablet daily whilst also prolonging the life of it. Here we try to help and advise how to do this.

We see lots of iOS devices, The majority of them are not running on the latest software. These software updates contain the latest advanced energy saving technologies that will increase your battery performance. The vast majority of you don't, because its a cant and not the reason you put updates aside.

iOS updates take large chunks of storage and eat into your phones memory. When you have albums of family events  and your lifestyle apps on there you simply cant upgrade because you haven't the free memory to do so. There's a trick where Cumbria Tech can maintain the data you have on your device whilst increasing the free memory to allow for these important software updates. We recommend the use of Apple approved data leads. Not because we love Apple and not Sainsburys copy but many of you coming to us have phone screens lifting caused by batteries increasing in size and swelling. This is caused by non approved charging leads allowing far too much current into your battery and what it can cope with.

The battery expands like in the iPad below. This then causes other issues, Screens bending, perhaps breaking. Moisture and other foreign particles entering the device which cause a repair cost to rise dramatically. Is spending a few pounds more on an approved charge lead worth a even higher repair cost or even the possibility of premature phone failure?

The way to tell if your using a non approved data lead ? It wont have any of the following features like Apple approved leads have like:-

1. The size will be consistent 12mm x 7.7mm
2. The gold contacts will be rounded on the end and consistent
3. The backplate will be white where the gold contacts are
4. The packaging will have made for iPhone iPad iPod and say designed in California assembled in China

Have you a non working charge lead? Our advice would be to contact Apple Support, they will give you a free charging lead as they are under their warranty.

Now lets tackle the issue of how to increase the daily battery life.

Your device is designed to perform in ambient temperatures of 16-22 deg the phone will be in its comfort zone. Exposure higher temperatures in excess of 35 degrees can damage the battery and over time damage the battery yet further. Just to confirm after we recently had an iPad with us that 2 minutes in a microwave isn't the new way to charge a battery either. Doing so will permanently damage and end your association with your device.

When your charging your phone you may need to remove it from the case if its getting hot and generation of this heat can affect performance. If your storing your phone unused for a period of time leave it half charged and power it down in a cool place.

Two simple ways to preserve battery life - Screen Brightness and Wifi. Dim the screen or use the auto brightness feature. Using your data plan and your mobile network will burn batteries much faster than your wifi. Use wifi if possible. Enable your low power mode found in settings>battery. Whilst your in there have a look at Battery usage and see which apps are using your battery life. To improve battery life, you can turn off the feature that allows apps to refresh in the background. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and set the switch to Off.

You can optimise your battery life by turning off Location Services for the app. Turn off in Settings > Privacy > Location Services.

Location Services, you can see each app listed with its permission setting. Apps that recently used location services have an indicator next to the on/off switch.

Home & Lock Screen. This indicates that the Home screen or Lock screen was displayed on your device. For example, the display was awakened by pressing the Home button or by a notification.
  • If an app frequently wakes your display with notifications, you can turn off push notifications for the app in Settings > Notifications. Tap the app and set Allow Notifications to Off.

No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal. This indicates that either you are in a poor mobile coverage area and your iOS device is searching for a better signal or that you’ve used your device in low-signal conditions, which has affected your battery life.
  • You can optimise your battery life by turning on Airplane Mode. Swipe up to open Control Centre and tap the Airplane Mode icon. Note that you cannot make or receive calls while in Airplane Mode.
